A woman was killed and seven other people were wounded when they were caught in the crossfire between rival taxi operators at rank near Nqeleni in the Eastern Cape.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, said the shoot-out took place at Ntleza taxi rank on Tuesday night.
"This violence continued and another shooting incident took place on the road between Mthatha and Lusikisiki where the road was blocked by taxis. A fleeing taxi driver was shot and killed and his taxi burnt," Mills said.
She said that the Taxi Task Team investigating the ongoing violence has been bolstered with additional resources.
Mills said that members of the National Intervention Unit and Public Order Police will be joining the Task Team.
"This extreme intolerance, violence and lawlessness will not be tolerated and we are warning those responsible that we are coming for them, they will not be able to hide from the long arm of the law," said EC provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga.
"We will act swiftly and decisively against those advocating this ongoing violence, intimidation and killing of people. Last night innocent lives were lost and those responsible can expect the full might of the law coming down on them," Lt Gen Ntshinga said.
