Police in Gqeberha opened an inquest docket following a fire at a block of flats which claimed the life of an elderly lady on Friday.
A flat in Sidwell, commonly known as the brown flats, caught fire in the late afternoon.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says when police arrived the fire department was still busy extinghuising the fire.
Nomathemba Mbatsha, (60), sustained burn wounds all over her body and was taken to Livingstone hospital where she passed away.
The cause of the fire is unknown and no foul play is suspected.
The investigation is ongoing.
