A woman who was set to appear in the George Magistrates Court on Wednesday was found dead in police holding cells.
The 31-year-old woman was arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing clothes to the value of R560 from a house in Pacaltsdorp.
Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says the woman was found hanging by her scarf at the Pacaltsdorp police station on Tuesday.
He says the incident will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
The woman leaves two children behind.
