A woman from Kwazakhele in Gqeberha was arrested on Sunday morning for falsely accusing two police officials of raping her.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 43-year-old woman and her boyfriend were drinking with friends on Friday when an argument broke out.
She says the boyfriend called the police and when they arrived they found the woman rowdy and intoxicated.
Two police officers removed her from the scene and dropped her off at home.
Colonel Naidu says it is alleged that the woman then walked all the way back to her boyfriend's house to tell him that she had been raped by the officers.
She says the woman was taken to the crisis centre and the hospital and a case of rape was opened.
During the investigation, it was established that the woman fabricated the story to "teach her boyfriend a lesson".
She will spend the night behind bars and will be charged with perjury and defeating the ends of Justice. on Monday when she appears in the New Brighton Magistrates Court.
Major General Vuyisile Ncata strongly condemned the false accusations, emphasizing the serious consequences they pose.
"This warning is issued, urging citizens to exercise responsibility when reporting crimes. "
"The opening of false cases is a criminal offence, and those found guilty will face legal consequences.
"We will thoroughly investigate such cases, ensuring that justice is served and deterring others from making baseless accusations," he said
