A man is in police custody in Gqeberha after he allegedly assisted his friends in looking for stolen goods in the Gro-Gro informal settlement on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says a house in Sherwood was broken into on Friday where several household items were stolen.
She says the following day the complainant and about seven friends drove in two vehicles to Gro-Gro to look for the culprits.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says soon after, Kabega Park police responded to a complaint of a shooting in the area.
She says when police arrived a private security company was already on scene and had blocked the entrance and exit routes to the informal settlement.
The private company responded after information was shared on a security WhatsApp group.
It was alleged that an ambulance driver was being held hostage, however, this was not the case.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says it was pure coincidence that an ambulance was in Gro-Gro at the time.
She says at the scene nobody would come forward and they could find no evidence of a shooting, however, with assistance from the community they found one of the men who was part of the group looking for possible suspects.
Police searched the 29-year-old man and arrested him for being in possession of a blank pistol with a blank round of ammunition.
The man was also found to be in possession of seven packets of Tik and five Mandrax tablets.
He will be charged with possession of drugs and is expected to appear in court soon.
