The 93-year-old woman who died when a huge wave crashed over her in a parking lot at Leentjiesklip in Wilderness on Saturday has been identified.
The victim was a retired mathematics teacher from Bloemfontein, Jo Hartman.
Bystanders and medical personnel tried to save her, but Hartman was declared dead on arrival at a George hospital shortly after the incident.
A family spokesperson told Algoa FM News that Hartman was with her daughter to look at the ocean when they were hit by the wave.
Her son, Paul Louw, is a town planner at Hessequa Municipality.
The incident occurred amidst extreme sea conditions and massive waves wreaking havoc across the Garden Route coastline and other parts of the Western Cape.
