Wilderness corporate weekend ends in tragedy

A man from Durban has died after falling out of a kayak while paddling on the Touws River in Wilderness during a corporate weekend.

The name of the 44-year-old man has not yet been released.

According to the NSRI, the incident happened on Saturday afternoon.

Deputy station commander, Mike Vonk, said an NSRI rescue vehicle, SANParks rangers and Western Cape government EMS officials and a George doctor responded to reports of members of the public performing CPR on a patient upstream.

“NSRI medics, a doctor and the EMS paramedic continued with extensive CPR efforts but sadly after all efforts were exhausted the man was declared deceased,” he said

Vonk said the man’s body was transported downstream and taken into the care of the SA Police Services and the Forensic Pathology Services.

An inquest docket has been opened to determine the exact cause of death.
