Public Order Police at George were involved in a shoot-out with at least three gunmen during a robbery at a petrol station in Thembalethu in the early hours of Monday morning.
The suspects managed to escape but a blood trail found on the scene suggests that at least one of them could have been hit during the exchange of gunfire.
Captain Malcolm Pojie says at least three men wielding firearms held up staff at the petrol station at around 2.15 am and ordered the petrol attendant to fill up their Toyota Hilux with 500 rands worth of fuel.
They then tried unsuccessfully to open the drop-safe in the garage shop after ordering the staff to lie on the floor.
Captain Pojie says the balaclava-clad suspects were involved in a heavy exchange of gunfire when police arrived but managed to flee the scene with a small amount of cash in their white Toyota Hilux bakkie.
The vehicle was later found abandoned in nearby Schaap Street and it was subsequently determined that it had been hijacked earlier the same night in Silver Town, Thembalethu.
No arrests have yet been made and the investigation continues.
