Police in Cambridge in East London are investigating an attack on the home of a Councillor of the Amathole District Municipality.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the incident happened at around 2 am on Sunday morning when shots were fired through a bedroom window of the 40-year-old ADM councillor’s Baysville home.
He said aid she was not in the room at the time, while her children escaped unhurt.
Kinana said the circumstances surrounding the incident are not known at this stage.
The councillor, Nanziwe Rulashe, made headlines this past week when she was seen being dragged and assaulted in a video that went viral on social media.
Five people appeared in court in East London on Tuesday in connection with the incident, which has drawn widespread local and national condemnation. The five were granted bail of R500 and they will be back in court next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Kinana said that Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene has instructed that a task team be established to investigate the shooting incident.
"We are definitely concerned about the security of the Councillor, hence we have ensured that police patrols in the area are intensified. Other security measures are not the subject of public consumption," he said.
Kinana said the matter was "receiving priority attention of all the role players involved in the case."
