Swift response by Uitenhage policing cluster members has resulted in the death of a robbery suspect and the recovery of stolen liquor valued at around R35 000.
Sergeant Majola Nkholi says police had responded after five armed men targeted a tavern in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, at approximately 8.30 am on Tuesday morning.
One of the suspects held the assistant at gunpoint, while the others ransacked the tavern.
They then made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, a television set and liquor - mostly cases of whisky.
Sergeant Nkholi says the suspects left the scene in a Nissan bakkie which was spotted moments later by Uitenhage K9 members on the old Uitenhage Road.
A high-speed chase ensued all the way into the Govan Mbeki area of Port Elizabeth, where the driver of the bakkie lost control and it overturned in Goniwe Street.
One of the suspects died at the scene, while the others managed to flee in between the houses.
Police recovered the liquor, some of which was damaged, and also confiscated the getaway vehicle.
