Western Cape roads claim five lives in weekend accidents


Five people have been killed in road accidents in the Western Cape over the weekend.

Provincial Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa says in the first accident on Saturday, a 51-year-old truck driver was killed at Poort Hoogte in Knysna when he lost control of the vehicle.

In another incident on Saturday evening, a 30-year-old pedestrian was killed in Kraaifontein.

Africa says a motorist was killed in an accident on the N1 between Hexriver and Laingsburg on Sunday morning.

Shortly after that, a 35-year-old pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in Khayelitsha and was declared dead at the scene.

Africa says an 11-year-old passenger died of his injuries early on Sunday morning after an accident on the N1 near Dwyka.

The boy was declared dead at the scene.

Western Cape officials said 11 motorists had been charged for drunken driving since Saturday and 169 more had been caught for exceeding the legal speed limit.
