Western Cape government to roll out ambitious E-learning project

The Western Cape Education Department will be rolling out an ambitious E-learning programme in disadvantaged schools across the province.

The Department says this initiative has taken years of planning and has the potential to make a major contribution towards improving the quality of teaching and learning in the Western Cape.

Western Cape Education Minister, Debbie Schaefer, says the E-Learning initiative is one of eight game-changing initiatives announced by Premier Helen Zille last week.

She says her Department will be investing heavily in this initiative and over the next five years will be rolling out broadband technology in hundreds of schools across the province.

Ministry spokesperson, Bronagh Casey, says the roll-out will start in April.

"It will cost the Western Cape education department R 1.2 billion over the next 5 years. It basically involves the roll out of  broadband and wi-fi to our poorest schools in the province which will benefit from the project as well as special needs schools." said Casey.

Casey says disadvantaged schools in the Garden Route will also benefit from the E-learning initiative.

"For example 3350 class rooms will be rolled out and that will be across the province, including the Southern Cape."
