The bowling community in Mossel Bay and also across the country is in shock following the shooting deaths of two well-known personalities of the sport, Trevor and Elma Davis.
Police said that 67-year-old Davis is believed to have shot his 52-year-old wife in their 17th Avenue home in Fijnboschpark late yesterday afternoon before turning the gun on himself.
A 12-gauge shotgun was found on the scene.
Mossel Bay police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Pieter Koekemoer, said a neighbour alerted police after hearing gunshots from the couple's home at around 5 pm.
He said on arrival they found the Davis home locked which had to be forced open by the SAPS with the assistance of the Fire Department.
Koekemoer said the couple was found on the bedroom floor.
Meanwhile, the death of the Davis couple has sent shock waves through the bowling community.
The President of Eden Bowls, Jenny Sinclair, says Elma was meant to represent South Africa at a world ladies tournament in Wales next month.
"They were both top level bowlers. She was a Protea bowler and he served on World Bowls, he served on Bowls South Africa and the Eden Sports Council. He was the past president of Eden Bowls and also its first honorary life President," Sinclair said.
"We would just like to extend our sincerest sympathies to the family for the tragic loss, not only to the family but the bowls world in general," she added.
