Speculation is mounting that Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, will be soon be redeployed by the ANC.
And, two powerful Cosatu unions, the SA Municipal Workers Union and metal workers union Numsa have cautioned against the move.
Samwu says it will mobilise its partners to oppose the move to axe Wayile.
"Samwu will do everything in its power as an Affiliate of Cosatu to mobilize our federation Cosatu, organized civil society formations, organised business and the broader community to reject this opportunistic and backward intervention which is to render the city ungovernable and a clear message that those at " ANC's Luthuli House " who are supporting this reshuffling have not seriously considered the situation and are actually undermining the people of the Metro on the proposed candidate to be the Mayor," the union said.
Provincial secretary, Siphiwe Ndunyana, also accused the ANC of undermining alliance structures by taking unilateral decisions on matters that affect everyone.
"As SAMWU we maintain that the alliance should be at the centre of these developments from National, Provincial and Regional level and that a broader discussion on the challenges facing not only Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality but the entire local government sector as we should be preparing for the coming National Elections for 2014," he said.
Meanwhile, Numsa says Wayile has been a victim of a well-orchestrated campaign led by certain key and powerful leaders in the ANC regional executive committee.
Numsa regional secretary, Phumzile Nodongwe, says Wayile's redeployment has nothing to do with accelerating service delivery.
"He has been subjected to all manner of infamy, including public attacks or political humiliation from within and by his trusted comrades in the broad liberation movement as led by the ANC. We are convinced that the redeployment of comrade Wayile has nothing to do with accelerating service delivery, but to serve the interests of certain powerful individual leaders who want to tenderize the ANC, " he said.
