Three Sterkspruit residents are expected to appear in court on Tuesday for allegedly attacking a policeman with a beer bottle.
Provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Marinda Mills, says the incident happened on Sunday when police responded to calls that residents had been blocking roads and demanding money for safe passage.
"POPS members were dispatched to the area and upon arrival saw four people fleeing the scene. Whilst they started giving chase, W/O Mhlangabezi Kakaza was attacked by one of the fleeing protestors and hit with a beer bottle on his head," Mills said.
"He sustained an open wound to his forehead and was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention and later transferred to a city hospital where he is in a very serious but stable condition. The possibility that the police officials were purposefully lured to the scene is not excluded and is being investigated."
Mill says the suspects will appear in court tomorrow on charges of attempted murder and public violence.
"We strongly condemn the violent and unlawful behavior of the protestors and request the community to stand together in stopping these senseless actions that are not benefiting anyone," Mills added.
