Nelson Mandela Bay's Water and Sanitation's Director, Barry Martin, warned on Thursday that the Metro is in a dire situation.
He was speaking during a municipal delegation visit to the Impofu Dam outside Humansdorp.
The Impofu is the main dedicated water supply dam to Nelson Mandela Bay residents and currently stands at just 16%.
It is so low that water can no longer be extracted from it and Martin said this was already having major implications on residents of the Metro as its large storage reservoirs have consequently been operating at very low levels with periodic interruptions.
Martin told journalists accompanying the delegation that the municipality will now use drastic measures to get water supply and that residents of Nelson Mandela Bay will have to stick to 50 liters of water per person per day.

The good rains in the catchment areas this week, with 145 mm recorded at Kareedouw, could not have come at a better time.
The Churchill Dam, which is much smaller than the Impofu, has risen from 86% to 94% in the past day.
If and when the Churchill starts overflowing, that run-off will flow directly into the Impofu.
