The National Department of Water Affairs will spend R1.66 billion on two regional water schemes in the Eastern Cape in terms of the department’s budget for 2014/15.
It says the total cost of the Ndlambe regional bulk water supply is R879-million and will serve the Ndlambe municipality, with its capital at Port Alfred.
The Department says this municipality has areas that are currently supplied from boreholes, which are often saline and brackish, and cannot meet peak demand.
The Mbizana regional bulk water supply project in the Wild Coast region of the Eastern Cape will cost a total of R780 million of which R242.9 million has been spent to date.
