Eastern Cape Economic Development MEC, Mcebisi Jonas, will sign an agreement on a partnership on Shale Gas research with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
NMMU will be hosting an Eastern Cape Inter-governmental Dialogue on Shale Gas on Tuesday.
Jonas has already announced plans for the Eastern Cape to become the energy hub of South Africa through various projects,, that include wind and hydro energy, biofuels and shale gas.
Last year, he announced the launch of shale gas exploration across a large area of the Eastern Cape that covered four district municipalities.
Jonas said at the time that his Department will collaborate with NMMU in investing in a cutting edge scientific research capability that would provide scientific data on various study areas of shale gas.
The initial phase of the project involves the creation of a forensic base-line for shallow ground water reservoirs in the Eastern Cape, ahead of shale gas exploration.
