The current water crisis in Port Alfred and surrounding areas has resulted in the Ndlambe Municipality disconnecting all public taps.
A Municipal Spokesperson Cecil Mbolekwa says the water flow to low lying areas has been 'throttled' and will be switched off in certain areas to build up reservoir capacity.
In the high lying areas, water tankers are being supplied.
The municipality also opened up a Facebook page called Port Alfred Water Crisis to keep members of the community informed.
Mbolekwa says at present the Sarel Hayward dam is below 6% and even though the pumps are fully operational, there is insufficient water to pump at full capacity.
The Mooifontein Boreholes are supplying water, however, at a very limited quantity as the water table has dropped significantly.
The Ndlambe Municipality urged residents to use all water sparingly as this is a crisis.
