Commuters stranded due to major power outage in PE

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro was hit by a massive power failure during the night and again in the early hours of this morning.

The Municipality says the outage was as a result of what they call a 'flashover' (electrical explosion) on the 132kV lines between Ditchling and the Chatty main substations.

The following areas are fed by the affected line:

Newton Park

Brickmakerskloof

Russel Road

Mount Road

Malabar

Kragga  Kama

Walmer

Northdowns

Perl road

Lawson Road

Neave township

The Metro says supply to Kwaford, Matomela, and Swartkops has already been restored.

No timeframe is available for the restoration of the rest of the Metro.

Meanwhile, commuters have also been left stranded in the Metro due to the outages.

A Spokesperson for Metrorail Mimi Katsio says trains are not moving due to the outage which is affecting the control center's communication with train drivers.

She apologised to commuters for the inconvenience.
