Five teenagers were killed when the driver of the taxi they were travelling in lost control on the R61 between Ngcobo and Cofimvaba on Monday.
A Spokesperson for Department of Transport in the Eastern Cape Unathi Binqose says the victims were aged between 15 and 19 and died on impact.
He says the taxi was travelling from Cape Town to Qumbu and Mount Frere.
Most learners are believed to have been travelling back home ahead of the schools re-opening on Wednesday.
Several children were treated for moderate to severe injuries.
A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
In December the R61 which links the Eastern Cape with the Western Cape, was identified as one of the most dangerous roads in the country.
