The East London Magistrate's Court has issued warrant of arrests after only one suspect out of nine handed himself over to Hawks Task Team members on Friday.
Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says the outstanding eight suspects chose to abscond and instead chose to send their legal representatives to appear on their behalf.
The warrants of arrest stem from a Hawks investigation were it is alleged the Buffalo City Municipality lost almost R15 million for services not rendered.
It is alleged that Ndodana Consulting Engineers Pty (Ltd) submitted fraudulent invoices to the municipality. The directors of the company and some senior officials at the municipality are believed to have profited from this fraudulent transaction.
Brigadier Mulaudzi says 63-year-old Monde Webster Ndodana, the owner of Ndodana Consulting Engineers, complied and handed himself over to the Hawks task team on Friday. He appeared briefly in court the same day and was granted bail of R30 000. The case was remanded to the second of May.
The National Head of the Hawks has ordered that the suspects surrender themselves to the task team members to avoid further embarrassment.
