Biggest Mandrax bust ever in Eastern Cape

Cradock Police and Highway Patrol members have seized 200 000 Mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R16 million in the biggest Mandrax-bust ever recorded in the Eastern Cape.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, says Cradock SAPS pulled off a white Toyota Hilux bakkie travelling towards Port Elizabeth late on Saturday night and found 23 bags of dagga in the back the bakkie. Two suspects, aged 25 and 27, were arrested. The dagga weighed 486.2 kilogrammes and has a street value of R1.4million.

Mills says while police were still on the scene, they stopped a suspicious looking white Colt bakkie.

Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered 200 000 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R16 million in a hidden compartment of the canopy.

The 45-year-old suspect was arrested on the spot.

Mills says its certainly one of the biggest Mandrax-busts countrywide and is a huge blow to the dealer network in the Eastern Cape.

The suspects will appear in court on Monday.
