Warehouse full of unprocessed tobacco discovered in East London

Unprocessed tobacco found stashed in a warehouse in East London

SAPS

A 31-year-old East London man has been arrested for the possession of R10 million worth of unprocessed tobacco.

He’ll appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court soon where he will also face a charge of bribery.

Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana says the suspect was arrested yesterday at a Thorn Park warehouse in the Metro following a tip-off from customs police based at the Beitbridge border post with Zimbabwe.

Brigadier Kinana says local customs officials and police swooped on the warehouse which was stacked with more than 1200 boxes of raw, cut and unprocessed tobacco.

He said the suspect allegedly tried to bribe the customs officials with an undisclosed amount of money in order to evade arrest.

More charges could be added as the investigation unfolds.
