Volkswagen Motorsport will honour two employees who died in a road accident after this weekend’s racing in Gqeberha, at a memorial service at Swartkops Raceway next weekend.
The head of VW Motorsport, Mike Rowe, on Tuesday confirmed the passing of Rodger van Schalkwyk and Floyd Sipinyu, on Sunday near Colesberg.
They were returning to Johannesburg after Round 3 of the Extreme Racing Festival at Aldo Scribante race track when their truck was involved in a collision with another truck, which also led to the death of a third person.
“Rodger and Floyd were valuable crew members in the Volkswagen Motorsport team and we are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. Our heartfelt condolences go out to their families, friends and loved ones,” Rowe said.
He said Rodger was an experienced truck driver and had been responsible for the safe delivery of racing cars to and from events for a number of years.
“Floyd had been working for Graeme Nathan Motorsport for six years as a technician and a co-driver of the Volkswagen Motorsport trucks with Rodger,” he added.
Rowe also said that Volkswagen Motorsport would not be competing in the Global Touring Cars championship for the remainder of the 2022 motorsport season.
He said they investigate alternative options for their drivers, Daniel Rowe and Jonathan Mogotsi.
