Violent protests rock Dordrecht

Eastern Cape Local Government MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, will travel to Dordrecht in the North Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

That's where local residents, under the banner of the SA National Civics Organisation, have been protesting for several days.

In a statement Tuesday, Qoboshiyane's office said he had received a petition from Sanco containing several allegations and inviting him to address their concerns.

"Some of the issues raised in the petition were matters that fall outside of MEC Qoboshiyane's mandate. The MEC sent officials from the Departments' rapid response programme to attend to the petitions in the document sent by Sanco."

"Even though there were engagements with the locals on these issues, violent protests continued unabated. The MEC's visit is aimed at quelling tensions between Sanco and the Municipality, call on both sides to find each other and address concerns with respect. Issues that are not genuine concerns will not be entertained."

Meanwhile, local freelance journalist Sharon Salmon, says one person had been fatally wounded and several injured people admitted to hospital.

According to a report to be published in the Barkly East Report, 72 people had been arrested.

Salom says the South African National Civic Organisation led march started on Monday, 6 August 2012 where residents demanded that Dordrecth be incorporated into the Joe Gqabi District Municipality and not under Chris Hani District Municipality.

A mass march is also being planned for Wednesday to coincide with the visit to the town by MEC Qoboshiyane.
