A violent protest broke out at one of Walter Sisulu University's Mthatha campuses earlier on Monday.
Police and additional security were called in when angry students broke in and looted the bookshop and burnt a security company vehicles.
University spokesperson Angela Church says the student representative council has nothing to do with the strike, at the moment they are not certain what the issue is.
Church says they have arranged to meet with the students on Tuesday to find out what the problem is and solve it.
"There are a group of students who were unhappy about refunds regarding bursaries that matter was resolved, however there is some other unrest or student grievance that has swept this unrest into quite an escalated situation" she said.
