Police in the Free State have released the names of six of the victims who died in Monday’s tragic bus accident in Welkom.
The Intercape bus was travelling from Durban to Upington when the driver reportedly lost control of the bus, which then overturned.
The driver then committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree.
His body was discovered 300 meters from the accident scene.
Most of the victims were from Durban and Kimberley.
The deceased were identified as:
The driver who killed himself was identified as the 32-year-old Ntuthuko Samkelo Buthelezi from Durban.
Two other victims have not yet been positively identified.
The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Intercape Spokesperson Pieter Louw said the driver was trained and familiar with the route. He says the bus was also in a roadworthy condition.
He said they would give their full co-operation in the investigation.
