Veterinary student planning peaceful picket outside East London Zoo

Some Buffalo City residents who signed a petition to rescue the East London Zoo animals will picket outside the 82-year-old Zoo on Saturday.

This follows after pictures of some of the animals, especially the bears, went viral on social media.

One of the picket organizers who is also a Veterinary Science student Gabriella Naidoo, says they want to create an awareness and show their concern for the animals.

Naidoo says this is a legal peaceful awareness campaign to protest against the cruelty of the animals at the zoo.

"I am trying to remain as neutral as possible in this situation, to be a platform to make the public aware and informed as to what is going on" she said.

Naidoo says she wants the public to be involved and have their say, since the zoo belongs to the community.

Several companies and small businesses have since jumped on board to help where they can.

The Buffalo City Municipality spokesperson Samnkelo Ngwenya, says they are overwhelmed by the support that they are receiving in the community.

He says corporates, individuals and even people from abroad have come forward to be part of the process.

"The zoo is operating so we want to ensure that our zoo is the best in the country" he added.
