Mystery surrounds death of robbery suspect in PE guest lodge

Mystery surrounds the death of a robbery suspect in a Port Elizabeth guest lodge after he was overpowered and tied up by two men aged 65 and 85.

Police said the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning at a lodge in Walmer when the men from Gauteng awoke to find the man in their room.

Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, says during the scuffle to apprehend the suspect, the 65-year-old was stabbed in the face.

She says the men subdued and tied up the suspect, but when police arrived the suspect had died.

Janse Van Rensburg says an inquest docket was opened and a post-mortem will reveal the exact cause of death.

Police are urging the hospitality industry to advise their guests to be vigilant after booking into their guesthouses. Doors and windows should be locked when retiring for the night. The safety and security of our citizens is a priority and we encourage the community to assist us in our fight against crime by taking proactive measures.
