Various buildings destroyed by fire in Komani

A runaway fire has destroyed several buildings at the Old Creamery next to the Provincial Traffic Department in Komani.

The DA's Constituency Leader in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality, Jane Cowley, says this is the fifth devastating fire in the town in recent months.

She says the buildings and all their contents were destroyed in Friday night's blaze.

Cowley says the Fire Department remains incapable of rendering a fire-fighting service as they have no functional vehicles and no equipment.

"I shall write to the Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Xolile Nqatha, to urgently request that the administrator of the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, Monwabisi Somana, be tasked with allocating sufficient funding to upgrade and restore the fire-fighting unit", she said.

Provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says they are investigating a case of arson.

He says the damaged warehouses were keeping stock for furniture stores, including vehicles.

"Among the affected buildings were SAPS Supply Chain Management offices which were also renting at the center", Nkohli said.

Hei says the damages are estimated at around R80-million.
