The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says there is an indication that the homeless might have started the fire that damaged a plastic walkway on Marine Drive.
Firefighters were called out to the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning after the fire broke out.
Municipal spokesperson, Mamela Ndamase says the homeless often start bonfires to keep warm in cold weather conditions in the area.
Ndamase says the municipality condemns this kind of vandalism as it costs the city money to fix.
She says the extent of the damage still needs to be assessed but the walkway has been close to the public.
