Five men are in police custody after allegedly kicking a vagrant to death in Central, Gqeberha on Thursday night.
The incident happened just before 10 pm on Rink Street.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the five suspects were arrested in front of the Engen garage just meters away from the crime scene.
She says it is alleged that they assaulted a group of vagrants who were sleeping in front of a fast food outlet on Rink Street.
Several roleplayers who were busy patrolling the area stopped at the scene when they saw a group of people standing around a body lying on the ground.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says the deceased was severely assaulted and died from his injuries.
She says the victim, who is believed to have been in his fifties, could not escape his attackers.
The suspects, aged between 31-41-years-old fled towards the Engen garage where they were swiftly arrested.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says if anybody can assist the police in identifying the victim, they should come forward so that an attempt can be made to trace his next of kin.
The five men will spend the weekend behind bars and make their first appearance in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court.
The area, which is a known spot for vagrants to spend the night was all quiet on Friday morning with not a single person in sight.
