Urgent application filed to get interim interdict against Shell

Four environmental and human rights organisations have filed an urgent application for an urgent, interim interdict to stop oil giant Shell from commencing seismic explorations on the Eastern Cape Wild Coast.

The papers were filed in the Grahamstown High Court and the application is supported by an environmental law firm, Cullinan and Associates.

The application seeks to stop Shell from starting a series of seismic tests for oil and gas using an air gun which reportedly emits extremely loud shock wave emissions and would disturb and destroy marine life.

According to a statement on Tuesday, the application was brought on behalf of Border Deep Sea Angling Association, Kei Mouth Ski Boat Club, Natural Justice and Greenpeace Africa.

The matter will be heard on Wednesday.

Last week, South African fuel company, Express Petroleum, says it's severed ties with Shell - ahead of a controversial ocean blasting project - off the wild coast next month.

The supplier says it doesn't support the decision by the oil and gas giant to carry out the seismic survey to search for hydrocarbon deposits beneath the seabed.

Environmentalists, who are trying to stop the survey from going ahead, insist it will harm marine life.
