Update on angry cop on viral video

Police management has launched an internal investigation after a policeman, who was allegedly off duty at the time, was caught on camera assaulting his colleagues and resisting arrest.

In the video, which has since gone viral, the officer was allegedly taken to task for smoking dagga.

The Officer whose rank and identity is unknown at this stage then goes into a bizarre rage mumbling about Rastafarians and cops in movies.

The member was eventually pepper-sprayed and subdued and even then, it took seven officers to secure him into the back of a police van.

The officer is currently at a medical facility where he is being assisted.

The police watchdog (IPID) says it will not be investigating the incident as it did not fall within its mandate.

Algoa FM News reached out to police to find out if there were any truth to the posts on social media that the officer had a breakdown, due to his brother dying in his arms.

According to SAPS, they had no knowledge of such an incident and described it as rumours.

Our team reached out to the Provincial Police Spokesperson in the Western Cape, Colonel Andre Traut who referred us to Warrant Officer Joseph Witbooi.

W/O Witbooi would not give us the rank or age of the officer in the video and referred us back to Colonel Traut.

It is not yet clear if the officer is facing criminal charges.
