A wanted suspect who has been on the run for almost a decade has appeared briefly in the Knysna Magistrates court on Friday.
Fifty-four-year-old Kenneth Gainsford, a former Bank employee, is accused of stealing a client's Kruger Rands to the value of R7.8 million.
Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says Gainsford allegedly stole the coins in 2011 when the owner gave it to him for safekeeping.
He says a warrant of arrest was issued for Gainsford and he was arrested at a house in Wilderness on Thursday.
Pojie says it is alleged that when the owner asked for her coins back Gainsford first refused and then said that the coins had disappeared.
He is remanded in custody until his next court appearance on the 27th of January where he is expected to apply for bail.
