Unprecedented water disaster at our doorstep

Churchill Dam

Supplied by Nelson Mandela Bay Metro

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is counting the days before half of the City will run dry.

The Metro repeated its warning on Wednesday that if no significant rain falls in the catchment areas in the coming days, the City will be faced with an unprecedented water disaster.

The areas that will be affected by the water outage constitute 40% of the City and include the Western Suburbs, Summerstrand, Blue Horizon Bay,  the Kariega/KwaNobuhle area and peri-urban areas such as Greenbushes and St Albans, where one of the Eastern Cape's s biggest correctional facilities is situated.

In terms of the water supply and usage statistics released on Wednesday, the Metro only has 38 days of water availability left for these areas.

Executive Mayor Eugene Johnson hosted an information session with the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber on Wednesday.

The session with the NMB Business Chamber focused on the impact that the water disaster will have on the local business sector and options available to the business sector to mitigate the effects.

On Thursday, 5 May 2022, the Executive Mayor will host public information sessions with residents.

These sessions can be watched LIVE on the Municipality's Facebook and YouTube pages.

A primary concern is the residents of the Metro continue to use too much water - up to 299 Megalitres a day and not the ideal of 230- 250 Megalitres of water a day.

Nelson Mandela Bay's four main supply dams are currently at just 13.07% of total combined capacity and the appeal is once again for residents to reduce their consumption to 50 litres per person per day.
