Unlicensed driver arrested for overloading unlicensed bus

Eastern Cape Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu has commended the swift response by provincial traffic officials following a tip-off from community members about unroadworthy vehicles that were caught transporting learners in the Nyandeni area.

Her spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca says Port St Johns Traffic Officers went to the Victor Poto School in Libode on Wednesday morning where they found an unroadworthy bus that had last been licensed in 2010.

The driver had no driver's licence and the bus had 84 scholars on board yet was certified to carry only 55 seated and 16 standing passengers.

Kumbaca said the bus had been impounded in Mthatha and the driver detained and charged.

He said they were waiting for the bus owner to come forward and that he would be charged with allowing his driver to operate without a licence.
