Uitenhage principal dies after making citizens arrest

Uitenhage police have opened an inquest docket following the sudden death of the 60-year-old principal of Daniel Pienaar Technical High School late on Thursday afternoon.

Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, reports that Samuel Marais died after making a citizen's arrest with the help of a fellow teacher and a community member.

She said it was alleged that some learners from the school were mugged by two men while walking down Daniel Pienaar Street.

The suspects fled with their cell phones while the learners rushed back to the school hostel to report the incident.

Captain Swart said Marais, the two learners and a teacher chased after the suspects and apprehended one of them in Buxton Street.

"Marais was standing next to the suspect when he suddenly fell to the ground. Community members contacted the ambulance services and he was declared dead on the scene," said Swart.

A case of robbery was opened the same evening and the juvenile suspect was sent to a detention facility in Port Elizabeth.

Swart said one of the stolen cellphones was recovered while the search for the second suspect continues.
