A Uitenhage man has been wounded in a shootout with the police.
Warrant Officer Gerda Swart says a patrolling policeman saw the man acting suspiciously in the Kamesh area on Friday evening, and as the policeman got closer to him, the man started running away.
She says when the policeman gave chase, the man pulled out a firearm and started shooting at him. The policeman returned fire, wounding the suspect in both legs and the shoulder.
Swart says the man was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital.
He will appear in Court soon on charges of attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm.
