Police have arrested a suspect for a shooting incident in Rosedale in Uitenhage this past week in which 21-year-old Lewin Cowie was killed.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the suspect, also aged 21, was arrested on Friday in a house in Macuba Street in Langa by members of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
“The incident is gang-related and the motive for the murder is not clear at this stage,” she said.
Naidu said Cowie was shot dead in Spekboom Street on Thursday when a gunman fired shots at him. She said as he fled he was joined by another male.
“A witness heard the gunshots and saw the suspects running away from the shooting. He chased after them in his private car.”
She said the two men ran into a yard and disappeared.
Naidu said they dropped a black bag containing a 9mm pistol, which was reported stolen in Humewood, in Port Elizabeth in May.
“The firearm will be sent for ballistics analysis,” she said.
The suspect will appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 28 April, on a charge of murder while the search for the second suspect is continuing.
Cowie's murder was one of two fatal shooting incidents in Uitenhage late last week.
