Ugie residents hold anti-crime protest

About 400 learners from the Ugie High School in the north-Eastern Cape joined some local residents in a picket protest outside the town's magistrate's court on Wednesday.

That's where two suspects appeared in connection with the brutal murder of 62 year old Christo Gouws.

Her school principal husband Christo was also stabbed during the attack in their home early in June.

One of the organisors of the silent protest, acting principal Ronel Coetzer, says the case was postponed to Monday.

She says theyr'e opposed to the suspects getting bail.

"We wanted to protest against the rumour that one of the suspects would have been released on bail. When we got there they told us that it was only today (Wednesday) that they're going to determine the date for the next hearing which will be on Monday."

"We also feel the whole process has become stagnant and we want action," she said.
