UDM promises no disruptions at next NMB special Council meeting

The UDM said residents of Nelson Mandela Bay can rest assured that the party would not cause any disruptions at next week's re-scheduled special Council meeting that will deal with several motions seeking to remove Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, Speaker, Jonathan Lawack and Chief Whip Werner Senekal.

This promise was made on Wednesday by UDM councillor, Mongameli Bobani, after last Thursday's meeting degenerated into chaos forcing the Speaker to reschedule the meeting.

Bobani said the UDM never promoted chaos at that meeting, adding that Lawack had failed to adhere to decisions taken at a multi-party whippery meeting.

However, he also welcomed the Speaker's swift response in rescheduling the next council sitting.

"We welcome the swift response of the Speaker and we really congratulate the speaker for that. We can assure the residents of Nelson Mandela Metro and of the country that this particular meeting is going to be a council meeting whereby there will be no disruptions," Bobani added.

He issued a written apology to his party over the weekend for his role in last week's chaotic council sitting.

In the letter, released to the media on Saturday, Bobani, also apologised for touching or colliding with Cope MP, Deidre Carter, who had also attended the meeting, however he was unrepentant about taunting Trollip.

“So, I taunted my persecutor. Trollip. Trollip, my tormenter. Trollip, the man who had belittled me. Trollip, the man who had smeared me. Trollip, the man who had used me to gain tenuous power, and then systematically demeaned me and tossed me like another rag no longer needed,” Bobani said in his letter.

In a statement on Wednesday, the UDM, said it was impressed with the "DA's transparency" of allowing a safe space for its councilors to vote with their conscience during the motion of no confidence against Cape Town Mayor, Patricia De Lille.

"The democratic example set in the Cape Town Metro Council on 15 February when DA councilors were allowed to vote without fear of reprisal is exactly what the UDM promoted in the Constitutional Court last year," said UDM councillor, Thoko Tshangela.

The special Council sitting is scheduled to take place on the 10 April at 10:00 am.
