Two wounded in Northern Areas gang shootings

The immediate response to a shotspotter signal has resulted in the arrest of a 25 year old Port Elizabeth gang affiliate and confiscation of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a 13 year old teenager was shot outside a shop in Pienaar Street, Gelvandale at about 20h15 on Saturday night.

According to police information, the boy was being assaulted by a group of men outside the shop and  was then  shot in the stomach.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

A member of the SAPS Gelvandale responded to the alert from the shotspotter signal and arrested a suspect in a house in Pott Street, Helenvale, a short while later.

A 9mm firearm, reportedly stolen in Algoa Park in  December 2016 was confiscated during the man's arrest.

Earlier in the day,  a 27 year old pregnant woman sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach while standing outside a house in Deverill Street in Helenvale.

Colonel Naidu says the victim from Cape Town was attending a funeral at the house when she was struck by a stray bullet.

Shots are believed to have been fired by unknown persons in the street.

A case of attempted murder is being investigated by Gelvandale police detectives.
