The immediate response to a shotspotter signal has resulted in the arrest of a 25 year old Port Elizabeth gang affiliate and confiscation of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a 13 year old teenager was shot outside a shop in Pienaar Street, Gelvandale at about 20h15 on Saturday night.
According to police information, the boy was being assaulted by a group of men outside the shop and was then shot in the stomach.
He was taken to hospital for treatment.
A member of the SAPS Gelvandale responded to the alert from the shotspotter signal and arrested a suspect in a house in Pott Street, Helenvale, a short while later.
A 9mm firearm, reportedly stolen in Algoa Park in December 2016 was confiscated during the man's arrest.
Earlier in the day, a 27 year old pregnant woman sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach while standing outside a house in Deverill Street in Helenvale.
Colonel Naidu says the victim from Cape Town was attending a funeral at the house when she was struck by a stray bullet.
Shots are believed to have been fired by unknown persons in the street.
A case of attempted murder is being investigated by Gelvandale police detectives.
