Two Port Elizabeth men suspected of criminal activity have been ‘necklaced’ by angry community members in New Brighton.
Eastern Cape police management condemned the mob killings of 23-year-old Sinethemba Gwatya on Monday afternoon and 29-year-old Mandla Hashe on Tuesday morning.
In both cases the men sustained severe injuries and tyres were used to burn their bodies.
Police said at both scenes, no one was willing co-operate and say who killed them.
According to an earlier statement however police said Gwatya was suspected of robbing people in the local community.
Murder cases have been opened at New Brighton SAPS and investigations are underway to establish the causes of the mob attacks.
“We strongly condemn violent and unlawful behaviour and urge the community to stand together and stop these illegal actions,” said EC Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General, Liziwe Ntshinga.
“No one has the right to take the law into their own hands and under no circumstances will we allow this to happen. Those responsible for these murders will be arrested and brought before court,” she said.
