Two Nelson Mandela University students drowned on Saturday morning while swimming at Sardinia Bay beach in Gqeberha.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said “it is alleged that a Democratic Alliance Student Organisation event was taking place at the beach when a male and a female, approximately 19 years old, went into the water to swim.
“The female, after experiencing difficulty managed to swim to shore. However, while being attended to by paramedics, she passed away,” Naidu said.
She said the body of the male student has not yet been found.
“Divers searched the sea for about two hours without any sign of him.”.
Naidu said the names of both students were being withheld until their families have been traced and notified.
