Two navy vessels will be in Nelson Mandela Bay this week, and members of the public have been invited to board both vessels this weekend.
The SA Navy's Hydrography ship SAS PROTEA is currently berthed in Port Elizabeth Harbour for the World Hydrography Day celebrations from tomorrow until the 22nd.
As part of the visit, SAS PROTEA has adopted Marinatha Children's Home in Walmer for a community outreach activity.
Meanwhile, the frigate SAS ISANDLWANA will be joining the celebrations and will arrive in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
Both ships will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday between 10am - 3pm and entrance is free.
South Africa is a maritime nation and as such hydrography plays a vital role in ensuring that the trade entering and departing our harbours can take place in a safe environment.
Furthermore South Africa is situated on one of four strategic choke points on the African continent and South Africa has a responsibility to the international community to provide safe sea lines of communication around our coastline. SAS PROTEA has been doing this exceptional task since 1972.
