Two men killed in Bethelsdorp shooting

Two men were shot and killed in an armed robbery in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth on Thursday night.

Police Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says a man and a woman were closing up their shop, which backs onto a house in 7th avenue, when they were robbed at gun-point.

Janse van Rensburg says four suspects ran around the back of the house and shot dead a man from Gelvandale who was sleeping in a shack attached to the house. His name has not been released.

The men then entered the house and shot dead another man, identified as 29 year-old Justin Philander.

The murders are not believed to be gang-related at this stage.

Police are looking for six suspects and anyone with information is asked to contact the Bethelsdorp police station.

Earlier in the evening in a separate incident, members of the police tactical response team were involved in a shoot-out with four men in Gelvandale. The suspects are all in custody.

Janse van Rensburg says four men had robbed the Cotswold Supermarket of cash and cigarettes and also robbed a man outside the store of his wallet and cellphone.

The men fled in a silver coloured vehicle which was spotted by members of the Mount Road Police, who gave chase.

They called for TRT back-up and the suspects were cornered in Gelvandale where a shoot-out ensued.

Two suspects were injured, one of whom remains in hospital.
No police members were injured and two firearms were seized at the scene.
