Two men in court in Plett for crimes against children

Two men accused of crimes against young children appeared in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The 34-year-old handyman who allegedly sexually assaulted a six-year-old boy in the bathroom of a popular Plettenberg Bay preschool briefly took his place in the dock.

Following his arrest on June 8 this year, it came to light that he had been on parole at the time of the incident and had two previous convictions - one for attempted murder and another for assault.

Prosecutor Henriette Breedt indicated that due to his recent arrest the Department of Correctional Services had made a decision to revoke his parole which would have expired in 2018.
The suspect then indicated that he no longer intended to apply for bail in latest matter.

The case was postponed until  5 August for further investigation.

The 18-year-old murder accused Lulama Candani also appeared in court on Friday following psychiatric evaluation at Valkenberg Hospital in Cape Town.

Candani is accused of slitting eight-year-old Sesona Bhayibhile's throat and dumping her body just a few metres from her home in Bossiegif in December last year.

Breedt indicated that the psychiatric evaluation report revealed that Candani was fit to stand trial and that there were no signs mental illnesses.

The matter was postponed until  3 August for a decision on whether the matter would be heard in a regional or in a high court.
