Two people were killed and three others injured following a single-vehicle accident on the N2 near Colchester on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Charles Bramwell says a family was travelling from Makhanda in the direction of Gqeberha when the driver lost control of his Nissan Tida on the N2 between Colchester and Kinkelbos.

He says the passengers were all ejected from the vehicle and two adults, a male and a female, died at the scene.

Bramwell says the driver and a 5-year-old boy are in critical condition and had to be airlifted by chopper to a nearby hospital.

He says a 3-year-old girl survived the accident with moderate injuries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow the chopper to pick up the injured.

The names and ages of the victims are not known at this stage.

A case of culpable homicide is under investigation.
